Another side of metal
The cello-driven band Apocalyptica offers a different take on metal classics. The four-piece ensemble was formed back in 1993 in Helsinki, Finland, by Eicca Toppinen, Antero Manninen, Max Lilja and Paavo Lotjonen. All four members are classically trained cellists who attended the Sibelius Academy. Apocalyptica started their career making cello renditions of classic hits by the legendary metal band Metallica, and audiences were soon enthralled hearing Metallica anthems like "Ride the Lightning", "Fade to Black" and the ever-timeless "Enter Sandman" being played on four cellos. Their versions gave a fresh new take on metal classics using non-conventional instruments and neoclassical arrangements for the genre. In 1996, they released their album "Apocalytica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos". The album served as an impetus that propelled the band to stardom. Following the massive success of their release, the band recorded a live version of the album in 2018. The album, "Apocalytica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos – A Live Performance", was recorded in Olavinlinna Castle in front of a live audience. Apocalyptica have also produced their own original songs. They have featured singers from famous metal bands, like Corey Taylor from Slipknot for the song "I’m Not Jesus", and Brent Smith from Shinedown for the song "I’m Not Strong Enough". Apocalyptica’s original songs received highly positive recognition by fans and gave the band much respect as composers.
