NASCAR History
NASCAR (The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) governs numerous racing events including the Sprint Cup Series, the Camping World Truck Series, and the Nationwide Series. The origins of NASCAR dates back to the 1920s and 1930s when Daytona Beach became famous for setting world speed records. NASCAR was officially founded in 1948 with the original points system scribbled down on a bar napkin. The first NASCAR event held outside the United States was in Canada in 1952 on a dirt track in Stamford Park near Niagara Falls.
The Sprint Cup is by far the biggest and most famous NASCAR circuit. The track received its first sponsorship in 1972 when the series was known as the Grand National Series. It was later renamed the Winston Cup Series before eventually becoming the Sprint Cup Series. Today, the circuit hosts the championship series at the end of the season featuring the top 10 drivers. The Chase for the Cup is the culmination of a long season and decides who will be crowned champion. NASCAR has become one of America's most popular sports, trailing only the NFL in terms of viewership and popularity.
NASCAR Milestones
From the first record-breaking speeds set in Daytona Beach in the 1920s to today, NASCAR has continually pushed the limits of mechanical engineering. One of the greatest drivers of all time, Richard Petty, has etched his name into the record books for numerous statistics. He holds the record for most wins (200), most pole positions (123), most series championships (7, shared with Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson), most all-time laps completed (307,836), and most all-time laps led (51,406).
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway holds the world record for the highest venue attendance with 350,000 attending a race in 2004. The circuit also boasts the largest seating capacity of any venue in the world with 257,325 seats. The Texas Motor Speedway, Talladega Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway,
and Bristol Motor Speedway all feature in the top 20 largest sporting venues in the world.
