Rugby Union History
One of two rugby codes, rugby union dates back to the mid-19th Century and has been governed internationally since 1886. Originally spreading throughout the British Isles and Ireland, rugby union quickly became a popular sport throughout the British Empire and was picked up globally by countries including New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia. Today, there are 101 full members of World Rugby across six continents. Rugby union remained an amateur sport until 1995 when salary restrictions were removed and the game became professional for the first time.
Rugby Union Records
There are three major competitions in international rugby; The Six Nations Championship, The Rugby Championship, and The World Cup. The Six Nations Championship is an annual tournament between England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy. It is the successor to the Home Nations Championship and the Five Nations Championship. England is the most successful team having lifted the Six Nations Championship on six occasions and boasting an overall record of 28 trophies including the predecessor tournaments. The Rugby Championship is an annual tournament between Southern Hemisphere teams Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Prior to the inclusion of Argentina in 2012, the tournament was known as the Tri-Nations. New Zealand is by far the most successful side having lifted four Rugby Championships and 10 Tri-Nation trophies.
The Rugby World Cup is considered the most important trophy in rugby union and is held every four years. Since its inception in 1987, New Zealand has won the tournament four times, more than any other nation. England is the only Northern Hemisphere side with a World Cup victory. As emerging nations improve, the World Cup has become more competitive. This was characterised with Japan's shock win over South Africa in the 2015 World Cup, considered by many to be the greatest upset in the history of the sport.
