The musical pioneer
Ryuichi Sakamoto formed Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1977 and has been at the forefront of electronic music innovation ever since. Playing alongside bass player and keyboardist Haruomi Hosono and drummer Yukihiro Takahashi, the band has shaped digital recording with progressive use of samples and synthesisers. They broke onto the international scene in 1978 with a self-titled debut album, which included the smash-hit ‘Computer Game’. The song charted in the United States and the United Kingdom, signalling their universal appeal. Utilising snappy drum machine sounds and looping samples, Yellow Magic Orchestra took some of the first steps into the synth-pop genre. Determined to simultaneously pursue solo projects, Ryuichi Sakamoto has released several famous albums including "Thousand Knives" and "Futurista". His work is often recorded in Japanese and English, exploring ambient and experimental sounds. Demonstrating a thirst for a broad artistic expression, some of his music has been released in the form of video albums and live recordings.
