Otherwise known as Anne Clark, Clark began playing guitar at the age of twelve, and actually acted as tour manager for her uncle’s band Tuck & Patti, while she was just in her teens! Growing up in Dallas, Texas most of her free time was spent participating in theatres and playing in the school jazz band! After graduating from Lake Highlands High School in two thousand and one, she actually attended the ever prestigious Berklee College of Music! Three years in, however Clark dropped out, and in an interview with Backbeat magazine she admitted “I think that with music school and art school, or school in any form, there has to be some system of grading and measurement. The things they can teach you is quantifiable. While all that is good and has its place, at some point to have to learn all you can and then forget everything that you learned in order to actually start making music.

In two thousand and six, Clark adopted the stage name St. Vincent, beginning work on her debut album! While she had previously released a number of EP’s such as Paris is Burning and Ratsliveonnoevilstar in collaborating with other artists, the recording and producing of this effort laid solely on Clark. Her name comes in reference to a number of things, the first point she brings up is Saint Vincent’s Catholic Medical Centre, which also stands as the resting point of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas with St Vincent admitting, “it’s the place where poetry comes to die, that’s me.” She has also said that it references her great-grandmother, whose middle name was St. Vincent, while in an interview on the famous American late-night sature, The Colbert Report she said the reference to the hospital came from Nick Cave’s song, “There She Goes my Beautiful World” where he states “And Dylan Thomas died drunk in/ St. Vincent’s Hospital
