A Games mainstay for nearly a century
Men’s field hockey first graced the games in London in 1908 but only became a permanent fixture in Amsterdam in 1928. India were the most dominant team during the mid-20th century, winning seven out of a possible eight golds up until 1964. Germany and Pakistan have reached the top of the podium on four and three occasions, respectively, while Argentina picked up their first gold medal at 2016 after beating Belgium 4-2 in the final. The women’s game had to wait until 1980 before being accepted into the Games program, with Zimbabwe winning the final against Czechoslovakia. Since then Australia and the Netherlands have won three golds each, but the reigning champions are Great Britain following their surprise success in Rio in 2016. Up until 1988, both the men’s and women’s teams were invited to compete but countries now have to book their place via various continental championships and official qualification tournaments. Staged at the Oi Hockey Stadium
The field hockey action in Tokyo in 2021 gets underway at the Oi Hockey Stadium on July 25 with both the men’s and women’s group games and concludes on August 7 with the women’s final and bronze medal matches. All 12 teams in each competition are already confirmed, with Argentina, South Africa, the Netherlands, India, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Spain competing in both alongside host nation Japan. The men’s also features Belgium and Canada, while the women’s includes Ireland and China, too. The Aussies are expected to pick up their second gold medal in the men’s game, although Belgium and the Netherlands will provide stiff competition.
