Woodstock 50 – celebrate an historic festival
Designed to celebrate the half-century anniversary of one of America’s most culturally important music festivals, Woodstock 50 was scheduled to hit the circuit in the summer of 2019. You can both buy and sell Woodstock 50 tickets on StubHub.
Artists both classic and contemporary
Held in August 1969, the original Woodstock Music & Art Fair in the New York State city of Bethel attracted more than 400,000 people thanks to a stellar line-up which included such iconic names as The Who, Janis Joplin, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Jimi Hendrix, and Sly and the Family Stone. Hailed as a pivotal moment of the counterculture movement, the festival’s legacy has continued to grow in stature ever since. In 2019 Woodstock’s creator Michael Lang decided to pay tribute to the event by staging a 50th anniversary celebration at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland. Several artists who had performed at the original festival were added to the bill, including Hot Tuna, John Sebastian, Dead and Company, Canned Heat, Country Joe McDonald, David Crosby and Melanie. They were joined by a whole host of more contemporary acts such as The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Cage the Elephant, The Raconteurs, Janelle Monae, Halsey and Miley Cyrus. The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts’ tribute
Sadly, due to circumstances beyond organisers’ control, Woodstock 50 was cancelled a month before it was due to take place. However, music lovers wishing to celebrate the anniversary of the landmark festival still had plenty of opportunities to do so elsewhere. Its history was commemorated throughout 2019 at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the cultural hub situated at the exact location of the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Fair. The venue exhibited a special display entitled "We Are Golden", which featured everything from instruments and equipment to art and clothing from the original festival, with particular highlights including the bass guitar played by Jefferson Airplane’s Jack Casady, handwritten lyrics from Canned Heat’s Alan Wilson, and sound engineer Bill Hanley’s mixing equipment. And several notable performers also took to the same centre to perform at the August 16-18 anniversary weekend, including legendary guitarist Carlos Santana, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s co-founder John Fogerty and none other than The Beatles’ drummer Ringo Starr.
